Day 26 - A movie that you love but everyone else hates

The Long Goodbye, in my opinion the best movie Robert Altman ever made and the best movie Elliot Gould was ever in, he plays a revisionist Phillip Marlowe in the 70s. I absolutely love this movie but for some reason I can't figure out a lot of people either hate it or never heard of it or don't seem to get it.

It's problematic IF you expect Marlowe to sound like Bogart or Dick Powell or to be the guy who wins in the end. And for those who expected Altman to come up with another M*A*S*H. It might have been to dark even for the 70's. I'd like to think it could still find it's audience, a la Touch of Evil or Beat The Devil. (Hell, I still think someday people MIGHT at least be willing to re-evaluate Heaven's Gate.)

I love Bogart and Powell, but this was a really interesting take on the character. My husband loves it, so he showed it to me a couple of years ago, and I loved it too.

I think it's great.

the whole point of the movie is missed if you expect a Bogie-type Marlowe.

Agreed, but I think the film was badly marketed at the time, so people
were led to expect something different than what they got. Even I was taken aback the first time I saw it, when I was going through all the Marlowe movies. I'm not sure what's the current DVD, but I'd love to see a good re-package with a featurette and commentary. Unfortunately Mr. Altman has gone to that big editing room in the sky, so there's no way to get his take on it at this late date.

I have the current DVD. Wanna come over to my place and watch it sometime? I can make cake and you can meet my roomie and see the Hugh museum.
