I must be feeling more vulnerable emotionally because of my friend dying because my moods recently have been very extreme. I'm either feeling really good or really bad from very minor stimuli.
Depressed people tend to hide the condition (what happened to Kutner was sadly not unlikely). For him it may have been the end of a long suffering, one that he couldn't share even with the people closest to him.
Agreed with Damigella and Cuddlyclothes. it's normal to not really know what you're feeling from moment to moment.
I lost a client (patient) a few years ago and didn't expect it to hit me - but it manifested in very surprising ways, just break down in tears in the middle of class and not know what I was crying over, etc.
And your friend was your friend for a very long time...
It'll take time. Ultimately, you'll be fine, but it'll take time.
