It was pointed out to me that I love to surround myself with the beautiful, from flowers to butterflies to art to Hugh and I never really thought of it before but is that some weird way of compensating for people's low opinion of my own appearance and my anger at this opinion?

19/10/11 15:23 (UTC)But I actually think the desire towards beauty is a very natural one in humans, and it only differs in the kind of beauty one craves. Plato argued that the best education was to use love of beauty to bring kids to loving virtue. As intermediate steps were previewed love for one beautiful man and love for all beautiful men.
So you're just more forward in your education than others are, because you like higher-level form of beauty.
And let me finish with a quote (from a closeted gay man): "Beauty is the first test. There is no permanent place in the world for ugly mathematics." I just see a kind of beauty most people don't, which seems to be fair in view of my total lack of music appreciation.

19/10/11 16:21 (UTC)If you were trying to alter yourself- physically, emotionally- to change yourself because of people's idiotic opinions, that would be a bit worrying and perhaps a case of compensating, but I don't think that wanting to surround yourself by things you like, compensation of any sort!
