because IMHO, slash is not about "let's make these characters gay who seem to be straight in canon", it's about "the relationship between character A and character B is the most emotionally intense relationship in the show/movie/books, let's take it to the next level."
also, those two are really fun to write for. in the better epies, the emotional dynamic is so complicated that you can write anything from the schmoopiest fluff to the darkest angst and if it's well written enough it'll be IC.
also, I'm convinced Hugh and Robbie are deliberately playing certain scenes for subtext. Look at the way they look at eachother.

Oh yeah, I have no doubt about that. I do like some House/WIlson slash and yours is fun to read because it makes me think "Yeah, I can buy that."

Do you think of it as "just fanfic" relative to how much you want it polished and as close to professional caliber as possible.

I think for the most part it is pretty close to professional caliber, at least I think I write better than some professionals.
