Incarceration

Chapter 4

Foreman stared out the car window. "I can't believe you talked me into this. You're just doing this because you feel sorry for House."

Chase sighed. "Yes, I do feel sorry for him, the guy's in prison and I think we should go visit him."

"So you're okay with him driving a damn car into Cuddy's wall?! He could have killed somebody!"

"No, I know what he did was wrong, but I can still feel sorry for him. I don't in any way condone what he did and I certainly don't think Cuddy had it coming or any bullshit like that, but House has been having a rotten time of it for a long time and I do feel bad for both of them. I knew they weren't going to work out as a couple but I never thought it would get that bad. Besides, you didn't hear this from me but Cuddy was a lousy girlfriend. She couldn't accept House the way he was."

"Why didn't you say anything to him about it earlier?"

Chase drove a little faster. "Do you think he would have listened to me if I had? He probably would have told me to fuck off."

"What makes you so sure he's not gonna tell both of us to fuck off now?"

"I'm not 100% sure he's not gonna tell both of us just that, but today is visiting day, I still care about the guy and I'm gonna make an effort."

"Make an effort, you actually baked the guy pumpkin cookies." Foreman rolled his eyes. "You owe me a big favor for this."

"Oh, Foreman, there are a couple of things we definitely should not bring up. One, don't brag to House about you getting his old job. The last thing he needs to hear about is your fat raise and redecorating his old office with that big mirror and all that."

"I'm not an idiot, I know better than to tell him about that."

"And whatever we do, we don't tell him who's got Cuddy's old job. If he knew who was running the hospital now he'd have a fit."

"Have a fit, hell, he'd blow up the hospital like the damn Joker."

Chase couldn't help laughing at this in spite of himself.

Foreman continued, "I still don't think he's gonna want to see us. I don't think he's gonna want to see anybody except maybe Wilson. Hey, do you have any idea what happened to Wilson? I haven't seen him around lately at all."

Chase shrugged. "No clue. I called him but I just kept getting his voice mail, I left messages but he never called me back, I went to his condo but he wasn't home, I definitely haven't seen him around the hospital recently."

Chase parked his car at the prison and he and Foreman went through the visitors' process and into the waiting room.

Foreman sighed, looking at the heavy glass wall separating the visitors from where the prisoners were about to be let in. He couldn't help remembering similar visits with his brother. Also, he hated to admit it, even to himself, but he couldn't help feeling a little sorry for House.

Especially when he saw him come in. He looked even more gaunt than usual, his limp seemed to have gotten noticeably worse and he just looked so sad and broken. He looked over at them and his large expressive eyes lit up with surprise--and, amazingly, a little happiness.

"What are you doing here?! You guys didn't have to come see me, but I'm glad you did," he said quietly, sitting down.

Chase said, "Of course we're going to visit you--"

Foreman interrupted, "Hey, what the hell is Wilson doing here?!"

You're on a roll, lady! I so wish I could write concise like you do. Reading your fics feels like being on a roller coaster - especially one of those were the wagon changes direction very often in a completely abrupt and unexpected way.
Who's the new Dean? And what is Wilson doing in prison? If the prisoner is his brother, than where is Wilson?
TOT (Totally Off Topic): I now wish I had asked you to bake pumpkin cookies ;).

next time you come over here i can make pumpkin cookies. I put ginger, nuts and nutmeg in them. They're awesome.
I'm so glad you like my fic! i was a little afraid that House being happy to have visitors was too OOC.

Now I want a recipe! And House must be happy about visitors after all the pain he had to go through in the previous parts. BTW, I loved both Chase baking and Foreman grudgingly agreeing to accompany him!

oh damn, i just remembered my pumpkin cookie recipe has white chocolate chips in it and you don't like white chocolate!
in my head fanon, Chase can cook, he just doesn't like doing it because it reminds him too much of having to get his own dinner when he was a kid because his alcoholic mom was too drunk to cook anything.

Your fanon seems very realistic - and sweet and painful. I tend to forget Chase's terrible past.
And white chocolate in a recipe I have no problems with - just pure I find it a bit bland.

OK, here it is:

2 and 1/4 cups all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ginger
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon cloves
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 sticks (1 cup) butter
1 and 1/2 cups brown sugar
1 cup unsweetened canned pumpkin puree
2 eggs
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
10 oz. white chocolate chips
1 cup nuts (I like to use pecans or walnuts)

Preheat oven to 300 degrees.
Whisk together the flour, spices and baking soda in a small bowl.
In a medium bowl, cream the butter and sugar with an electric mixer. Beat in the pumpkin. Beat in the eggs and vanilla. Beat in the flour mixture until just combined. Stir in the white chocolate chips and nuts.
Drop the dough by rounded tablespoon 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 20 to 22 minutes.

That looks awesome. What is inside the canned pumpkin puree? Just pumpkin? I might have to do that myself unless I can find it in the baby food aisle.

just pumpkin, but it's had all the weird stringy bits and seeds and stuff taken out and been cooked. take it from a foodie, it is NOTORIOUSLY difficult to do this with fresh pumpkin yourself. canned pumpkin is very easy to get at American grocery stores but it didn't even occur to me that it might be hard to get ahold of in Europe.

You can get fresh pumpkin peeled and de-seeded in European grocery stores. after that, I guess it's enough to boil it and then purée it. American cookbooks are full of the stuff, but European supermarkets have very, very different contents than US ones (on the other hand, you can now buy good pasta and arborio rice all over Europe, thus ensuring the survival of Italians abroad).

Nice long chapter! I like how you added more mystery to the mix--who is the new DoM and where is Wilson. Can't wait for more.

"Have a fit, hell, he'd blow up the hospital like the damn Joker." That fits House's normal reaction to a 'T'. The picture of HL in clown makeup comes to mind.

there's one of those online tests, which Batman villain are you? if House took that test he would totally get the Joker, I'm convinced of it.
i have this huge clown phobia. that pic drove me nuts.

Chase and Foreman are perfectly in character. Loving this. When do we find out about Wilson? And who is running the hospital? Please not Tiny Baby Daddy Taub.

Again, not to be rude, but MOOOOOAAAAAARRRRR!!!!!

nope, it's definitely not Taub running the hospital. In fact House might not mind Taub running things because it'd be fairly easy for House to manipulate Taub into getting what he wants. The person running the hospital now has known House longer than Taub and is more on to his tricks.
you'll find out about what's up with Wilson in the next chapter.

OK< you've definitely got my attention here - the dialogue seems a little wordy for Foreman and Chase, but I have no trouble imagining the actors' voices here.

MOAR.
