one thing about him that amazes me is how well his lyrics translate from French into English. I'm not sure any other composer could pull that off.

I didn't even know you could translate Jacques Brel :). Some of his songs are so beautiful we learned them as part of my French course, like they were poems.

I can't speak or read French; some British singers have done covers of his songs in English and I've also read translations of his lyrics written out as poetry. he wrote some amazing melodies too.
