Not much going on here right now. I wish disability paid more. I don't make enough to support myself, let alone roomie. :(

Does roomie contribute to the rent?

I KNOW how you feel. I've just had to negotiate an installment plan for getting Fletcher neutered, and we are once again broke.

rent is not an issue. my parents are generous enough to pay that but they don't pay for anything else.

For some reason this reminded me of the one time when I woke up and crawled to the kitchen at 7am in my usual comatose state - to find my nanny in tears. She had been at the vet starting at 4am and was desperate for money, so she let herself in at 6.30 and waited for me to wake up. It was heartbreaking (the dog also died despite a last-minute operation).

I can't comment on your specific situation because I don't know all the details surrounding your roomie- I just know I wouldn't have a roommate unless they were paying their fair share of the rent and expenses especially since I am on a very limited income myself. If I can help a friend out of a jam, or for a short period of time while they get their life in order that is one thing, but not as a permanent situation. They aren't my spouse- and to be honest, I doubt I would keep a spouse around if they were capable of contributing but just weren't making the effort.

And I am not saying that the 'fair share' would have to be financial in the form of a rent check if I was financially solvent- but I wouldn't have someone around who could not contribute to the household in some manner- even if it is just bringing in food or taking responsibility for the cleaning, laundry and other household chores.

If I had tons of money and could afford to set some of my friends up, then that would be a different story- I would love to, but as it is- my needs and affordable wants come first and foremost.

Disability does suck, but you can supplement it with a certain amount of cash earned from a job. I could manage without the side work, but it would be tight and I certainly couldn't afford to even help support anyone else, even rent money wasn't an issue :(

he doesn't have a job at the moment but it's only a matter of time and the shitty economy. he is extremely helpful around the place. he does the cleaning (he's better at it than me), he helps fix things, he helps with the shopping, he does all the heavy lifting, he was INVALUABLE after I got out of the hospital, he does a lot of the cooking (he made dinner last night) and this is his computer. so it isn't as if he's getting some sort of free ride. he also has an excellent DVD and music collection which I get to use as much as I want and he helps a lot with computer tech crap.

Ultimately it's only you who can decide whether what you're doing for your roomie is too much or just right. It's just a pity the two of you can't get a job, even part time, but hopefully the economy will improve soon. And it's so good of your parents to pay the rent.
