I have this weird theory that every band, TV show, person, has their total opposite. The opposite of the Grateful Dead is the Ramones. (I happen to like both of them but my taste in music goes all over the damn map as you can probably figure out if you've read a lot of my posts.) The opposite of "The Brady Bunch" is "M*A*S*H". (Holy moly, do those asterisks ever fuck up my typing speed!) The opposite of me is George w. (Hail to the chimp!) the opposite of Hugh Laurie is...Madonna!
here's proof.
Hugh: British person who is very good at faking American accent.
Madonna: American who sucks ass at faking British accent.
Hugh: Very talented at acting (both comedy and drama) music, singing, and can even dance.
Madonna: Acting is so bad even her fans don't bother going to her movies, can't play any musical instrument, sings like yappy little dog and dance ability consists largely of spastic flapping and twitching with crotch grabs.
Hugh: notoriously modest.
Madonna: massive ego even by showbiz standards.
Hugh: turns me on no end.
Madonna: makes celibacy look attractive to me.

Probably a bunch of Madonna fans are gonna want to lynch me after this but i don't care. :P

you have to be good at selling yourself if you have an ego that big and talent that small. I feel sorry for those kids. They are never going to have a normal childhood.

I, totally, dig Jeeves & Wooster! I just finished watching a 5 season set of DVD's I borrowed. Jeeves sure is an evil little control freak. hee He's not evil in the sense of being mean/demonic...it's just-he does stuff because he can...making him just a tad bit wicked, is all. =D

My best friend gave me all the DVDs for Jeeves & Wooster. I've loved them for years and I read the books back when Hugh used to be on Blackadder.

This is my first glimpse of the 'House' persona showing through in his british humor work. Which, I think is why it's my favorite skit. I would venture that the real Hugh Laurie has a large sarcastic streak inside. I totally enjoy dry humor, like my own. Did you take the House personality quiz I posted on my LJ? I came out as House.

I took that test and I came out as House too. So much for that "opposites attract" nonsense. >;)

I think there is truth to opposites attracting, though it's not necessarily all inclusive. I think, if you look at people who are supposedly opposites, they are very much alike in their opposition...like mirror images...or photo negatives. Their very 'alikeness' is expressed in an opposite way. Did that make sense? hee

Let me simplify with an example. House and Wilson are both the same, yet opposites. House is an a-hole and Wilson is a nice guy...but underneath what we see outwardly they are not opposites. They are both exceptionally analytical in their field. They are both detached from women emotionally and dont' "get" why their relationships fall apart, and they both are sarcastic and they both are manipulating, etc.
But they are opposites in the way it comes out. For example;
House thinks that keeping his distance is best because he'll be more objective, Wilson thinks its best for his patients if he behaves with more care. Wilson acts like he cares about his patients and House acts like he doesn't...but for the same reason. They both want the best for their patients.
What I said previously should now make more sense...hopefully.

that does make sense...I've never been attracted to anyone who was the opposite of myself though, except for the fact that I'm not a good looking woman but i like good looking guys. But good looking women also go for good looking guys.

I used to think I was attracted to my opposites, but soon found out I was so wrong. The very things that annoyed me in my significant others, were the very things I disliked about myself. 'That' was a tough pill to swallow...good thing I discovered it on my own.

I'm neither beautiful nor ugly...but being attracted to good-looking guys is normal...I have never "gotten" one of those guys. I have always ended up with mid-range, like myself. Geeks tend to like me, but that doesn't go both ways, except with friendships. hee

As for your attractability...do you 'get' those good looking guys? Cause if you do, I'd be questioning my opinion of my own attractive-ness, if I were you. LOL

no. I don't even get the unattractive guys. They want good looking women too.

I've had really attractive female friends struggle to get dates because the guys were too intimidated. Others it was because of how they presented themselves, or didn't.

Since you test came out as you being House (which realistically speaking means virtually nothing, but I'm using it anyway), I am assuming that you are somewhat reclusive? If that's true...then that could explain most of that. I have a sneaking suspicion that you are more attractive then you give yourself credit for. hee

You'd be wrong. House is self-conscious about his leg. I am just as self-conscious about my appearance. People I don't even know scream horrible comments at me when I'm just hanging out minding my business. They take my picture with their stupid fucking cell phones and laugh at me. I've met guys over the phone and online who practically begged me to go out with them, then i show up for the date and they won't even talk to me. I know you are trying to be nice and I appreciate it but it isn't all in my head. Another level I relate to House on: I'm pissed off about people behaving like idiots.

Okay... my mouth is shut. For many of my friends, it's in their heads, as you said. I've been self-conscious about my ears, cause they stick out. So, I can relate to that as well. I wear my hair long enough to keep them covered, when I get it cut off...but I like it long anyway, so it all works out.

I want to read your LJ to get better acquainted, but my vertigo condition is affected by all the bright reds, for now. I'll have to read it later. It's nothing personal, I just can't deal with too much visual stimulus at this time.

Do you have other websites you frequent...like MySpace or something?

that's understandable, I just have a thing for bright reds. I have a couch that looks like it belongs in an Edwardian brothel. nope, no MySpace. I can wait. You seem like a really intelligent, fun person, and that kind of person is worth waiting and cultivating a friendship for. (I do relate to House on many levels but I'm a good deal more social than he is. Admittedly that's not saying much.)

The doctors don't know the cause and none of what they know to do works, so I get to ride it out like I did three years ago. =o[

I relate to house on many levels as well...did you see my test results on my LJ? I've watched the show from when first it aired and it never dawned on me that I had anything in common with him. Remember our conversation about opposites not attracting...hee

As it turns out, I have analyzed my own vertigo condition thoroughly and beyond sort of like the way he does his patients...LOL. In fact, I still am, because the 'real' doctors have no clue what is causing my symptoms, so there's no treatment. I have to ride it out, as it were. In my searches online I have found that there are a plethora of people with the same condition and the same results...no earthly, help.

My vertigo-head can't handle the search...do you have a direct link to the actual fics? Sorry if it's a bother.

That is quite interesting...although there are myriad other factors you could also consider, which obviously nobody could satisfy to a t (what is with that phrase, anyway?), but...you've obviously thought a lot about this... XD
