This is my LJ entry 666! MUAAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!!

day 13

your favorite childhood show

Depends on which point in my childhood. My favorite show when I was about eleven or twelve was M*A*S*H. Apparently I just generally like smartassy doctors.

I know the great comparison for House is Holmes, but I wonder if there's a case to be made for Hawkeye as well?

some TV critic called House "Hawkeye on bad speed".

The substance abuse makes an interesting comparison. The big divider is Hawkeye's perceived humanism vs House's misanthropy, however, I think the case can be made that there's less distance than you'd think Hawkeye is determined to save individual patients and fight the dehumanizing effects of the war, but it's not clear that he's got all that high opinion of humanity in general, whereas House, much as it pains me to admit, may not be quite as much of a humanity-hater as he likes to put up. We can't blame all of his posturing on the leg or Stacy or even Dad, but there are clues that there's a bit of sweetness if not actual mush lying under the surface.

House is kind of at war with himself and Hawkeye really wasn't. Interesting you would bring up the substance abuse issue, since it's seemed sort of obvious to me for years that Hawkeye was an alcoholic and M*A*S*H kind of danced around that.

Well they did do that early episode that sort of dealt with it and completely wussed out by going for the laughs of having Father Mulcahy get drunk just before giving his anti-alcohol sermon. After that it was just "hahah Hawkeye and Trapper (or Hawkeye and BJ) are always drinking.

And you KNOW how pissed I am that they spent a whole season claiming House was recovering when he was clearly drinking and abusing alcohol all the way through and NO ONE including Wilson ever called him on it.

One of the things my dark!Jeeves fic is going to deal with is the issue of Bertie's drinking, by the way.

one thing I thought was ironic as hell was Larry Linville (the guy who played Frank Burns) was a HUGE alcoholic when the character he played was notorious for not drinking and disapproving of anybody else drinking, even if they were only moderate social drinkers.

"one thing I thought was ironic as hell was Larry Linville (the guy who played Frank Burns) was a HUGE alcoholic "

I didn't know that!

I don't know if that had anything to do with his leaving the show.

I wonder!

his replacement was better anyway. Better actor, (David Ogden Stiers) more fleshed-out character.
